Friday: Simply Blue

tsop yadirF eht ot emocleW !FIGT

This week, we've seen two of the final pieces out of the AHL jersey puzzle pieces that we've been missing for months, the IceCaps and the Gulls. One unveiled there's in regular fashion, the other had there's unveiled in the NHL16 trailer (Doesn't look like this will be the only unveiling from the video game).

Unfortunately, as some of you may guess, I'm definitely not the biggest fan of the IceCaps copying the Habs jerseys. I really thought they would be the one team to not copy their NHL counterpart, since the Habs are such an identity that is theres, they'd do something more cookie cutter, but not an exact copy. Maybe the away jersey and a red version of it would be awesome, but not the copy of the Habs red jersey, it doesn't look...IceCaps...just...Habs. The Nova Scotia Voyageurs did something similar to that, it looked fine, why not do that? Money!

On to San Diego! Where we get what plagued the AHL for years before the recent copy trend, cookie cutter syndrome. The Gulls wear Flames/Bolts copies, with orange and blue being the main colours, which I really dig. Some people are against it, but it makes them look more separate from the Ducks and is nice a bright. We've only seen the white jersey, but right away, the black yoke looks completely out of place. Scrap that and they're solid....compared to a Ducks copy.

IceCaps: 5.75/10
Gulls: 6.25/10 (6.5/10 if the yoke is removed)

Hmm....today of course is Friday, and as you know, Fridays are important as they are the last days to get your votes in for most competitions. HOWEVER....this is no ordinary Friday! This is the LAST day to get your vote in for the HJC Open finals! The 2nd most important vote of the year, and have your say in which titan of HJC wins, CPM or Christian L

Don't let COTW get lost in the excitement however!

On to the concepts!

-------------------------------------------------------------

Calgary Flames Concept (By: Ryan C.)

+ This is one of the best "what if the Flames had an alternate in 1995" concepts I've seen, the colours are balanced perfectly and the flames don't overtake the jersey or make it too unrealistic
+ The new shoulder patch looks solid with the 90's logo set
+ I like that there's no hem stripe, flame or simple. The large black red space looks excellent and makes the white logo, numbers and arms pop

- The numbers are blurry on the back and too large on the arms
- It'a minor, but I would have use the 90's font (which is sort of italicized version of these numbers and more narrow) to match the era of the primary logo

Rating: 8.75/10

Chicago Blackhawks Concept (By: Jack G.)

+ I like the Hawks barber pole jerseys like most do, but a more subtle version would be better for an alternate rather than a one time jersey
+ C tomahawk on the arm striping looks solid
+ I dig the Bulls/White Sox script on the helmet

- Maybe it's the over saturation of roundel logos being unveiled these days, or that the Blackhawk have better roundel logos, and even the unroundelled logo would look better
- The numbers on the back are spread out apart and there's too much space between them
- The NOB is too large (unless that was intentional)
- The red used is too bright against the white and black, especially when the stripes are pilled on top of each other

Rating: 7.25/10

St. Louis Blues Concepts (By: Mike S.)

+ If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Now the Blue can say they're part of that category and I'm glad Mike keeps things relatively the same
+ Squared yokes are a minor change, but it looks the best of the 3 versions of these yokes I've seen (angled 98-07, rounded 14- present, and this)
+ Excellent execution, as expected from Mike

- Having double blue on the gloves looks weird, like how it would look on the pants
- Don't forget helmet logos

Rating: 8.25/10

Seattle Ice Dogs NHL Expansion Concepts (By: William B.)

+ I dig that the team isn't a Mets rehashing, but it still takes inspiration from them. The name Metropolitans is slightly out dated and shortening it to Mets...well bad luck to ya
+ Lots of teal and gray, like Arturs Irbe ran into Andrew Cassels and the combining force threw them to Seattle....the point is it looks like Hartford + San Jose
+ I always like when artists make their own logos, and this looks solid
+ Nice homage to the Mets, they did have nice jerseys

-  The white jersey should have coluoured yokes instead of gray ones to better balance colours
- Tv number s are too small, and the nob is too hard to read
- Since this is for an expansion team, do they really need a tie down, or is that trend enough to get they
- Scripts rarely work shoulder patches

Rating: 7.5/10

That's the post!
Don't forget to get your votes in.
Go Jets Go!
Have a great weekend!

Thursday: Time for a Redesign...for Real This Time

Hello guys and welcome back to another Thursday post!

Yesterday Dylan covered all of the logos and uniform news that happened so I'm just going to give my thoughts. For the pictures (aside from a few extra screenshots of the Gulls' uniforms) then go scroll down to his post!
Screenshots from EASHL trailer
As you can see the uniforms are Flames/Ducks hybrid uniforms. As much as I dislike copycat AHL teams, these would have been much better if they were just Ducks copies instead of these hybrids.

St John's: Classic uniforms but again unoriginal copies. I think going with last years version as opposed to the more classic version they're using this year (adding laces and using one color collar) was the better option for their AHL affiliate.

Winter Classic: The logos look great and I'm really looking forward to what we get uniform wise. My prediction for at least the Habs is their regular unis (possibly a different collar) with that logo on it, and hopefully they'll use canvas pants as well for accuracy.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So this week we have the final round of the HJC open with Colin and Christian and both giving us some great concepts for this final round, so go leave your vote for that, it'll be a tough one to pick. And while you're at it just move your mouse to the side of the page and vote for COTW as well. It's that simple!

HJC Open Final entries (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
COTW July 19-25 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

So as the title says I have finished my thing about the NHL teams who need a redesign...sort of. I did numbers 5-10 and the top 5 teams will be up next week. The order has changed slightly but none of teams themselves have, so my listing from last week is somewhat accurate. Anyways enough rambling, here it is! (contained in a spoiler tag since I now know how to do two in one post)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Onto the concepts!

Brooks F. - Reading Royals
Idea: Holy purple!(1/1)
Creativity: Definitely (1/1)
Execution: -Vertical stitching needs to stop at the chest stripe and then continue afterwards.
-Inside of the collar should be black on both jerseys
-Otherwise solid (1.25/2)
Realism: Definitely, especially for the ECHL with all the diamonds in the stripes(1/1)
Pizazz: I can't say no but I can't completely say yes either (0.5/1)
Other areas:
+ I love how the logo blends right into the chest stripe. It wouldn't have exactly the same effect in real life but still it would look cool
+Good logo choice all around
-Diamond overload. Waaaay too many. Either lose some or sublimate them
-The purple jersey may be too purple. I would make the pants black, but leave them purple for the white, or use shells since an ECHL team may not be able to have 2 sets of pants.
(3/4)

Overall: (7.75/10)

Brooks F. - Utah Grizzlies
Idea: This is a crazy jersey for an ECHL team. Fits well (1/1)
Creativity: Oh definitely (1/1)
Execution: Vertical stitching needs to stop at the hem stripes and the inside hem on the front should be green. Otherwise solid (1/2)
Realism: For anywhere above the ECHL probably not, but this is the ECHL (1/1)
Pizazz: For sure (1/1)
Other areas:
+This color scheme looks great
+The logo choice is great again as well
+Good choice leaving the pants blank
-I would flip the hand around so the nails are on the claw marks. To me right now it almost just looks like a decapitated hand
(3/4)

Overall: (8/10)

Ryan C. - Grand Rapids Griffins
Idea: Simple design and classic looking alternate (1/1)
Creativity: Creative concept (1/1)
Execution: There are a few loose white pixels near the armpit of each jersey. Otherwise solid (1.75/2)
Realism: Definitely (1/1)
Pizazz: Nope (0/1)
Other areas:
+Good, simple design that actually reminds me somewhat of the Red Wings
+The striping pops in a good way
+The font looks great
-Nothing really
(4/4)

Overall: (8.75/10)

William B. - Las Vegas Fighting Saints (NHL Expansion)
Idea: If the NHL expands to Vegas they definitely need some jerseys(1/1)
Creativity: Creating a team is definitely creative(1/1)
Execution: TV numbers look too small, otherwise solid (1.5/2)
Realism: For a Vegas team I'm pretty sure they're sold on Black Knights, but this is definitely a realistic look regardless (1/1)
Pizazz: I think so (1/1)
Other areas:
+The custom logos look great
+I like the use of the Minnesota Fighting Saints logo
+Saints of Sin City sounds contradictory but it works really well
+Great touch adding a T-shirt design
+The wordmark on the third jersey fits well
-The arm striping should be widened to match the hem striping
-I'm not sure that logo is really enough for primary status. It looks more like a shoulder patch to me. I have no idea about your knowledge and skill of designing logos, but it's hard to do without experience.
(3/4)

Overall: (8.5/10)
Quick note on presentation: I like the presentation layout and it's pretty much the same thing I did when I used this template but the back needs to be more visible, it's very hard to see the numbers and the font from the way it's laid out now, and in my opinion the TV numbers don't really show you how it would look on the back of the jersey.

And that wraps up this post. It's hard to pick one but I'm going to nominate William B.'s Fighting Saints concept for COTW since it can be hard to create an expansion franchise and he did a pretty good job of it. Do you want to leave your opinion on redesigning, or a concept on today's post, or nominate a concept? Then leave a comment! I hope you enjoyed the post, thanks for reading, and I'll see you again next Thursday.

Wednesday: New Stuff Today!

Hello Hey Hi and Welcome to another HJC Wednesday post! On time and on schedule.

Couple cool things happened in the past day so let's take a look shall we?

First, the San Diego Gulls jerseys were leaked in an NHL 16 trailer yesterday. I've been more excited for the EASHL trailers than this jersey and this just shows why. I wasn't expecting anything great from San Diego but I wasn't expecting anything this ugly either. It's like a weird Ducks/Flames hybrid template with so much of that electric blue color.
NHL 16 Screenshot
Rating: Bleh/Blah

Sticking with the AHL, the St. John's IceCaps showed off their new duds. They went from Jets clones to Canadiens clones. This team just can't cut the cord. Not saying it's a bad design, it's not, it looks good. It's just not very interesting. Was really hoping for a unique jersey or two.
Photos from St John's IceCaps
Rating: Canadiens/Hockey

And now something else involving the Canadiens. The 2016 Winter Classic logo was unveiled today, along with the logos that we can assume will grace the front of the teams' jerseys on New Years Day.

The Winter Classic logo is nice. People calling it boring but it's been growing on me since it got leaked this morning. I really like the top of it and the details under the Bridgestone logo are nice. I really like the old school Habs logo. The multicolored C and H is neat. And the Bruins logo is a Bruins logo. I've never liked black and brown together so meh. A lot of people are guessing we'll see jerseys from the early 20's which could give us a beautiful matchup with a lot of stripes... at least on Boston.

Well that's enough cool news. But we have something cooler for you anyway. Voting for the HJC Open Final!!! I think this is going to be a close one. Both Colin and Christian sent in strong entries for the final. I just voted while typing this sentence, so there's no excuse for you not to vote. It's that easy.

You know while you're voting for the Open you can vote for the COTW as well? It's just as easy! Poll's on the side of the page!

HJC Open Final entries (due Tuesday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
COTW July 19-25 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

Enough of my nonsense! Concept Time!

Tulsa Oilers Concept - Brooks F.
Brooks ignores the temptation to design cues from Edmonton's jerseys. The result is a classic/modern hybrid. The striping pattern is a classic hockey look, but it's beefed up with modern decorations for the team name and TV numbers. I'm ok with the TV numbers, but I think the team name is overboard. Not a big fan of the yoke. The end of it seems awkward. I do like the pants striping. Logo could me moved up a tad and maybe slightly smaller.

Rating: 8/10

Grand Rapids Griffins Alternate Jersey Concept - Ryan C.
I don't remember if this was an entry in last year's Griffin's contest, but since it's now July I'm assuming not. It would have been a good one though. I like the logo choice. It looks good on this primarily dark jersey. The pants don't exactly fit in but that's not Ryan's fault, it's just what they wear. I think a blue helmet would look a lot better as well.

Rating: 8/10

2017 Winter Classic Concept - Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Vancouver Canucks - Vaughn R - Willian B.
First off, the matchup probably wouldn't happen in a Winter Classic. Heritage Classic for sure. If you think that for the League's 100th anniversary the matchup won't be 2 Original 6 teams then you are probably wrong. Odds are it will be the Blackhawks and someone honestly. Everything the league do will be a spectacle that year and they'll want the most eyes on it so they'll go after 2 of the biggest draws and Vancouver doesn't fit that bill. Toronto is realistic though.

Jerseys - Toronto's jersey is a remake of the Toronto Arenas' 1918-19 jersey and it looks great. It's a shame there's no leaf on the shoulders or anything but I'm sure they could go on the epuipment...that we can't see... Vancouver's jersey is just a color swap of their Millionaires jersey with TV numbers and a shoulder patch. Ditch the TV Numbers and the Patch and it's pretty great.

Rating: 8.5/10

R&R Connection Concept - Achievement Hunter - BPoe96
I'm somewhat familiar with RoosterTeeth And Achievement Hunter. The jersey itself is great. I love the double stripe design. The logos look great and the connections to RoosterTeeth and AH are fantastic. This would make a top notch piece of merch. Execution is top notch as well. I'd like to see some more black on the socks and the hem of the jersey.

Rating: 9/10

There you go. Small but good group of concepts today! Don't forget to go vote for the COTW and Open Finals! And leave some comments or COTW Noms!

Tuesday: Tuesdays (Post) Gone With The Wind

Hey guys, you seem to be missing a post for today.  That's a bother, maybe I can help.

First off, for those involved, get your entries in for the HJC Open Final! And for everyone else, make sure you get your votes in when the time comes.

And everyone should remember to vote for COTW. Just make sure you're signed into Google and check out the tab on the side of the page. Easy peasey lemon squeezey.

Alright, no time to waste today, let's get straight to it!

HJC Open Final entries (due Tuesday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
COTW July 19-25 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

Michigan Tech Huskies - Ben S.

As far as I can tell, this suits their classic style of current jerseys well.
Colours are well balanced.
Good use of the straight-up college wordmark on the away jersey.

No TV Numbers
Looks really similar to what they use now (again, as far as I can tell)
Same jersey style on all 3 jerseys is kind of lazy

Overall: Solid, but uninspiring. 7.7/10

Washington Capitals -  Bpoe96

For all of the attempts of making a very pro-American jersey that I've seen, none are as original as this.
Simplistic style would work well for a Stadium Series game.
Having 2 different sock designs to match the flag is actually a really cool idea.
As complex of a concept this is, its executed very well.

Only problem is the gap between numbers on a back. If the plan is for the stripes to end right where the numbering is, then from a manufacturing and logistics standpoint, that's impossible. The numbers generally go on the jersey after. There's no really good way to fix this, but ending the stripes on the sides or right in the middle of the back is all you can really do.

Overall: This is one of the coolest concepts I've seen in a long time.  8.7/10

Idaho Steelheads - Brooks F.

Who needs colour to have beautiful landscapes on jerseys?
The mountain and tree designs look really sharp and well done.
One of the better black and white jerseys I've seen on the blog.
Good font choice.

I wish the grey highlights stood out just a little bit more, besides on the numbers.
I don't think the tree design would look too great on hockey socks. I think the "mountain" design would do just fine.

Overall: Very original and unique, but has tons of identity and its design is nearly flawless.  8.6/10

Faded Classics Fan Jersey Series - Vaughn R. & William B.

I don't really know how to review this one, so I'll just talk about it.  While the ones I reviewed on Sunday were mostly Vaughn's work, this one was mostly mine.  I wanted to make a "fan series" that is consistent with all 30 teams, and payed tribute to the heritage of the league.  But what I didn't want to do is recreate throwbacks, I wanted every team to have something basic, but new.  I had a bit of fun with this set, throwing in some old or rarely used logos and colours (like Buffalo in black and red, Florida in blue and Los Angeles in purple), and other than making the Blues jersey a darker version of the Rangers jersey, I love how they all turned out.

But I hope you guys chime in and tell me what you think about this concept.  Which jerseys do you like, and which should be thrown in the turd-burger pile? Let me know!

I'll give today's COTW nomination to Bpoe96's Washington Capitals concept, but Brooks' concept came really close.  I hope both concepts get some nomination love.

So don't forget to submit your HJC Open concepts (for those involved), vote for the HJC Open Champion in the next few days, and vote for the COTW sometime before Friday.

Sorry that this post was so late and rushed, but I'm happy I could give you guys today's post.

Thanks for reading, and see you on Sunday!

Monday is the new Thursday

Hello guys and welcome back to another...Monday post! Jack couldn't write today's post, so it is I, Brendan, your Thursday writer, filling in for him today.

I still haven't had the chance to finish that article on the redesigns, hopefully I can get that finished for Thursday. But I did make (well edit the text of) this comic so..here!

So this week we have the usual COTW vote and we also have the HJC Open finals! The two artists who have made it this far are the best of the best and the best can only be decided by you guys. They have until tomorrow to submit their final concept and then you vote. This round is sure to be a good one.

HJC Open Final entries (due Tuesday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
COTW July 19-25 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

-------------------------------------------------------------
Now let's get on to the concepts!

Brooks F. - Quad City Mallards
Idea: N/A (0/0)
Creativity: Simple look that reminds me of their current set, but doesn't copy it (1/1)
Execution: Vertical stitching needs to stop at the striping, otherwise solid (1.75/2)
Realism: Definitely could see this on the ice (1/1)
Pizazz: Nope (0/1)
Other areas:
+Mallards would look great in green
+The simple striping looks great
+The colors are balanced well
-Nothing negative really
(5/5)

Overall: (8.75/10)

Idea: N/A (0/0)
Creativity: Uses their current set as inspiration but gives it it's own features (1/1)
Execution:
-Chest stripe should be above the stitching that is there, then the stitching should continue afterwards
-The back numbers are hard to read, especially at a distance. I would make them black
+I would also make the name either green or black
(1/2)
Realism: Definitely realistic (1/1)
Pizazz: Again, nope (0/1)
Other areas:
+The striping looks great
+The alternate logos look great on this jersey
-The black stripes could benefit from being just a little bolder
(4/5)

Overall: (7/10)

Chris W. - St. John's IceCaps
Idea: As far as I'm aware the IceCaps have not unveiled their new jerseys and this would be much better than a Habs copy (1/1)
Creativity: Uses elements from Montreal but also has a unique look (1/1)
Execution: Back numbers and the Captain and assistants patches look too big, otherwise solid (1.5/2)
Realism: Definitely (1/1)
Pizazz: I can't say yes but I can't say no either... (0.5/1)
Other areas:
+The SJN logo looks great, and really uses the Habs identity well
+The arm length yoke looks great  as well especially with the striping in it
+The hem striping also has a Canadiens like look
+-Not sure if going with red socks on the blue jersey would look good or not, I guess it would be something I'd have to see on the ice to judge
-Based on what you currently have I would remove the small silver stripe on the hem on the white jersey and sock and make the socks on both jerseys identical to the Habs' socks. For a farm team this would be great so that way they can use the same socks.
-I would use the blue helmet on the alternate jersey as well, it reminds me of this jersey here and that would look better than a pure white helmet
(3/4)

Overall: (8/10) and a COTW nomination

William B. & Vaughn R. - Montreal Canadiens vs Ottawa Senators (Stadium Series)
Idea: Not a bad matchup for a Stadium Series, especially for the 100th anniversary (1/1)
Creativity: Unique concept for sure (1/1)
Execution: The numbers on the back look a little too large. The only other thing isn't detrimental to the look at all so I'm not even going to deduct points, but your title says "2017 NHL Stadium Series", but your logo has 2016. And either way wouldn't the NHL's 100th anniversary be in the 2017-18 season, because of when it was founded? (1.5/2)
Realism: The Senators look too conservative for a Stadium Series, while the Habs don't. Also they've always gone with the same template for both teams. That's not to say it can't change, especially for the 100th anniversary, but for now it doesn't seem realistic. (1/1)
Pizazz: Not sure.. (0.5/1)
Other areas:
+Much better than the Sens current jerseys
+Using that pattern in the striping is also a great look
+The Habs jersey looks more reminiscent of a Stadium Series jersey while also having a classic "vibe" to it
-The name on the Ottawa jersey would look much better in gold, the white stands out in a bad way, and the same can be said about the Captain patch
-The hem stripes on the Senators jersey look very inexact
(3/4)

Overall: (8/10)

Well that's all for today's post. Small batch of concepts again, hopefully the numbers will go up again soon and we can see some more concepts each day. Do you want to leave your opinion on a concept or nominate it for COTW? Then leave a comment! I hope you enjoyed the post, thanks for reading, and I'll see you again nex-... this Thursday.

Sunday: Grand Finale

Hey guys, welcome to another Sunday post!

As I mentioned last week, I'm in the middle of moving.  Right now my room is pretty much empty besides a couple of boxes, and my computer for the very purpose of doing this post. Do you feel special yet? Well you should.

So Las Vegas and Quebec City have come out of the expansion application process as the only two applicants ready, but the NHL doesn't seem to want to let Seattle fall through the cracks. So those 3 cities are still realistically involved, and there are a lot of analysts that suggest Las Vegas and Seattle make the most sense geographically, and because of the Canadian dollar, Quebec City would have a hard time surviving.

At first glance, yes, Seattle and Las Vegas make the most sense, because they will fill the 2 team gap in the Western Conference and even things out.

But here's something most people forget to notice. Assuming the current divisions stay intact, both of those teams would fit best in the Pacific Division. That makes 9 teams, so one team will have to move to the Central.  It would make no sense to break up the Albertan teams, so that leaves Arizona. Assuming Arizona is still around at this time, they'd have to travel further, much further. The team is already losing money, and adding on more travel costs will definitely sink them.

Following that scenario, when/if Arizona moves, they'd likely move to Quebec City (if Florida hasn't moved there first). Then one of those teams will move to the Central, which would either be Detroit (who really doesn't want to go back to the west), or one of the Florida teams. It wouldn't make sense to break up the Florida teams, and while Tampa would probably survive, Florida likely would not.

It doesn't really matter if Quebec City is included in expansion or not, either way, Florida would be in trouble.

But if they are included, and one of Seattle/Las Vegas in included, then Arizona is safe in the Pacific division.  And if they need to relocate once their lease agreement is over, then they can move to Seattle and no division adjustment is necessary.

And assuming I'm right about Florida, where to they go?  It would make most sense to move the team to the Central division, and there's actually a few possibilities there. Kansas City and Milwaukee would make the most sense, but Houston is a possibility, as well as Duluth, MN. A 2nd Toronto team could theoretically play in the Central. One last crazy but plausible solution could be Saskatoon.  Could Saskatoon really do worse than Florida?

And again, Detroit is a good candidate to move back to the west, but can anyone really see that happening? More division rivals, playing most games in their own timezone, cutting travel by a ton...yeah there's no way Detroit would like the thought of moving.

So that's my take on it. If the NHL expands by two teams, then leaving out Seattle right now is probably for the better.

*********************************************

So after that rant and a half, let's get back to the blog. This week is the HJC Open Final! Our top seeds from the first round have survived to the end, which should make this final round a round to remember.

The two artists involved need to get their work in by Tuesday, and then we all have to make sure it gets the votes and attention this matchup deserves. Pride, glory, and a victory from a month of hard work are on the line, who's going to win it? Good luck!

*********************************************

Before I get to today's post, I'd like to say how awesome it is that we have 6 COTW worthy concepts to vote on this week, after a very shallow pool of concepts to pick from.  Right now, we may not have many concepts to show, but the ones we do are quality pieces, so keep up the great work everyone!

HJC Open Final entries (due Tuesday @ 11:59pm Eastern)
COTW July 19-25 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm Eastern)

Here's today's concepts:

Columbus Blue Jackets - Alex H.

First up is Alex's Blue Jackets redesign.  Their current jerseys are decent if not plain. Does this redesign give jersey life to a team who's always lacked it?

Adding arm and hem stripes take away the "boringness" their current jerseys posses.
Stripes complement the logo well.
Equipment is well designed.
3rd jersey with newly recoloured logo looks great, love the stripe pattern.
Execution and presentation are top notch.

I don't like the white yoke outline on the blue jersey.
The stripes on the white jersey match the overall stripe pattern, but not the theme of the logo. Using the same stripes from the blue jersey would work, but create a lack of blue. Having thin blue stripes on the outside of the red/white/red/white/red pattern could fix that.
Whatever jersey logo isn't used should be one of the shoulder patches.

Overall: Most of my negatives are just personal preferences.  This is a fantastic set. 8.5/10

Winnipeg Jets -  Jimmy T.

Next is a Winnipeg Jets alternate, something the world clearly needs.

Light blue or silver would work best for a Jets alternate, one of which is seen here.
The inclusion of the old Jets logo is necessary, if they can possibly use it.

The striping pattern is really cool, and not too over-the-top.
Colours are well balanced.

No TV numbers.
Shoulder patches should be seen in front and back.
The "Jets" wordmark logo should be used as one of the shoulder patches, and on the helmet.
Gloves could have more of a design on them.

Overall: Based on idea and design, this concept would get my COTW vote every week.  But execution and lack of polish really hurt this concept.  7.9/10

Winnipeg Jets vs Calgary Flames - Vaughn R. & William B.

The last two concepts for today are by Vaughn and I from the HJC Pairs Competition this year.  During the competition, Vaughn decided what concepts we'd do, we split the design work, and I polished everything off at the end. These two concepts were ones designed by him, with some small alterations afterwards by me.

This was our Wildcard concept. Vaughn really likes the Thrashers, and thought a one-off game between Atlanta's two successors would be a fun thing to design. I wasn't so sure at first, but I love the idea now, especially from a jersey standpoint.

I basically left the Flames jersey alone otherwise, as I liked the design Vaughn used. They never used a yellow logo, or stripes like this, so technically there's very little connection to the Atlanta Flames, but it's a great looking 70's fauxback at least.

The Winnipeg jersey he designed was like this one but in the Thrashers' colours. I convinced him to swap the colours, and add the small jets in the bottom, and I really like the end result we came up with.

I see that I made the TV numbers and front numbers too small on the Jets jersey (a common theme among the whole set when I look at it). I also forgot to add the "Flaming A" on Calgary's shoulder patch.  Weak execution by me killed what could have been an awesome Jets concept.  As for the Flames concept, execution is good, but I don't necessary agree with the design, and how it doesn't really connect with the old Atlanta franchise.

But overall, it's a pretty awesome idea, and I think the jerseys we picked would suit the game nicely.

Tampa Bay Lightning vs Florida Panthers - Vaughn R. & William B.

This was another set designed by Vaughn then "remastered" by me.  We wanted to do several Fauxback concepts, but after getting clarification from Ryan, we had to pick one.  We went with a classic match up from two 90's teams in non-traditional hockey markets.

The Florida jersey is pretty much exactly what Vaughn sent me, but I swapped logos.  I figured the roundel logo would fit a fauxback jersey better.  It's hard to see this and think nostalgically, but this is basically an 80's design for a 90's team, which is what we wanted to accomplish. It's also a design that seems to fit them perfectly, even though they've never used anything similar.

The same things can be said about the Lightning jersey.  He used the rounded logo, but I added an outline to it. I also swapped positions of the black and grey to better match the yoke. But the rest was all Vaughn. Again, it doesn't seem like an old jersey, but it fits the 80's look that we went for. It's also an alternate that doesn't look ripped off from another team (LA and Ottawa). My only concern with this one is that grey really isn't necessary, especially when looking back at their original jerseys.  But it's original, and I like the design that he used.

Alex H's Columbus Blue Jackets concept gets my COTW nomination today.

I'd love to hear you guys review and score the concepts Vaughn and I made. I love posting concepts to the blog to get feedback, but sometimes you have to review your own material, and not much is learned. So if we good get some comments from you guys, that would be greatly appreciated.

So don't forget to vote for COTW this week, and for the HJC Open Final when voting opens later this week.  It's a huge vote that's one month in the making, so make sure you get involved!

Next week could get a bit scrambly because of moving, but I assure you that I'll have a post for next Sunday for you guys.

Thanks for reading, and see you next week!

Saturday: HJC Open Final

The winner of the COTW vote for July 12-18 was Christian L! This was Christian's 3rd COTW win in a row!

Full Results
Christian L. - 15
Chris W. - 13

The new poll for the COTW vote of July 19-25 has been posted on the side of the page. You'll need a Google account to vote. Voting ends on the usual time, 11:59pm Eastern on Friday.

I think it speaks to the quality of work showing up on HJC during this summer when we have 6 nominated concepts for COTW and only 26 concepts were posted. Nice work everyone and always try to get better. One day someone else may win 4 COTWs in a row and knock off Christian each time.

------------------------------------------------------------

We made it. We're at the Final of the 2015 HJC Open. Lets take a look at the results of the Semi-Finals;

CPM d. Adam G. (25 - 4)
Christian L. d. Taylor R. (16 - 12)

So it comes down to CPM and Christian. What a match-up that is going to be. The HJC Open has done what it is supposed to do. The best of the best should make it through to the end where a giant battle ensues and no one knows for certain who will win. We have that this year.

CPM and Christian both have until Tuesday at 11:59pm Eastern to get their entry in for the final. Voting will then take place Wednesday to Friday, ending at 11:59pm Eastern.

------------------------------------------------------------

I have another challenge I want to put forward to you guys this week. Create a concept using brown and blue. Or you could really challenge yourself and try to come up with a concept using pink and green. Step out of your comfort zone and do not be afraid of failure. In most cases you learn far more from failing than you do succeeding.

Friday: From Steelheads to Steeltown

Hey gang, welcome to the Friday post!

The big news this week in the NHL was expansion. There were only two locations that actually entered into the formal expansion process, Las Vegas & Quebec City, two of the locations that most people expected would be on the expansion bandwagon, but there were many cities that didn't apply that I would how would have. Kansas City, Portland, Seattle, Milwaukee all could have hosted NHL teams, and made the Western & Eastern conference even. now we may be seeing a 17/15 split baring a relocation like Florida. Some people were surprised Toronto didn't enter a bid...I'm very glad that didn't happen. Toronto has one crappy team, doesn't need a second. As for Seattle, they will eventually get a team once the arena situation is sorted out and Bettman leaves and stops this Arizona mess.

Speaking of the Arizona mess, looks like the City of Glendale and the Coyotes are making a deal, though I don't see Arizona making it to 2020 with the current tensions and the eventual emergence of a viable relocation to Seattle or another Western city.

Quebec City is already using the name Nordiques in their bid, completely expected, however that doesn't mean the classic...well whatever their logo is will be used, though that is what I'd expect given the popularity of it and the merchandise that already exist.

As for Las Vegas...eh Black Knights...??? I can't say I'm a fan of it. I really liked the idea of a team named after the gambling sort of city (Las Vegas & Paradise are a complex area to map out and describe). Aces, Neon, Gamblers, Wranglers would all be better, but Black Knights isn't a bad name. Hopefully their identity looks solid enough to make the name work.

With NHL expansion, that means AHL expansion (I think), so where will the eventual new NHL teams put their minor league teams? Las Vegas will probably put their team on the West Coast in another city in Nevada or New Mexico, or maybe a city that would have a solid fan base like Saskatoon. Quebec City would probably put their team in New Brunswick, Fredricton comes to mind.

Voting, have you done it yet? I hope so, the voting system has made it even easier to vote, no more emails, just click twice and your vote is sent, it takes 1 second, you can do it! Even Shia Leboeuf did it.

On to the concepts!

-------------------------------------------------------

Mississauga Steelheads Concepts (By: Alex H.)

+ The Steelheads have a good logo set, but they don't take advantage of the gray in their colour scheme and wear Leafs copies, these would be more original off the bat
+ The striping is solid, like a mix between Minnesota's red jersey with a hem stripe.
+ The St. Mikes Majors alternate would be a perfect fauxback, and the silver looks better that the double blue and brown
+ Good execution

- The single colour numbers would well on the alternate, but not on the home and road, the numbers would look better if they matched the script on the logo
- The tv numbers are too small

Rating: 8.25/10

Pittsburgh Penguins Concepts (By: Matt G.)

+ I really like the look of the RoboPen on the 1990's away jersey,  and this is a perfect way to redo it, without the triangular yoke
+ A yellow alternate would be perfect, and with that solid angular striping, it looks excellent
+ It more so has to do with the jersey this concept is based on, but the colour balancing is excellent on the home and alternate
- Solid execution, baring a few minor gripes

- Again, it has to to with the original, but the white jersey would match the black jersey more if the yellow and black switched placed on the striping
- The numbers could use an outline
- The striping on the socks looks exactly like the Bruins 80s jersey and current alternate
- Finally, the shoulder would look less empty with a shoulder patch

Rating: 8.5 /10

Binghamton Senators Concepts (By: Ryan H.)

+ Since the Big Sens are going the vintage 1920s route, the Baby Sens should take this opportunity to go inaugural expansion Sens, since their logo matches the dark colours of that era
+ The set has minimal changes, aside from the hem stripe on the black jersey, using the easier to read white numbers, and the addition of gold to the colour scheme, which makes the jerseys look more full
+ I'm not sure if they currently use that shoulder patch, but the B two colour patch looks solid
+ This set does what every AHL team should try to do, replete their parent team, but be original in some ways

- I would prefer the hems were matching, but after trying a similar idea in my NHL redesign, it's hard to do with the white jersey and still balance the colours without making the hem look crowded

Rating: 9.25/10 COTW Nom from me!

2017 All Star Game Concepts (By: William B. & Vaughan R.)

+ In terms of All Star Game colour schemes, bright Red & Blue from 2012 is my favourite in recent memory, and this would be an excellent way to bring it back, by making the jerseys pop
+ The stars on the hem remind of the European leagues their bright, eye popping jerseys, and this would be perfect for bringing back the NA Vs. W format
+ No damn neon green
+ The layout of the flags and logos and such look solid

- The primary logo is much too small and would look better if they overtook the stars
- The stars on the arms and numbers should match the stars on the hem
- Compared to the jerseys, the yokes are pretty tame and don't match the over the top theme

Rating: 7.5/10

Hello all and welcome back for another Thursday post!

Being a jersey enthusiast I have, like some of you as well, a decent collection of jerseys myself. Some of you may not be interested but I've made a page on my blog with my whole collection. I'll list them down below but if you want to see pictures as well click the right here, and leave a comment with your collection too, I want to see how your collections look as well. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So, about the title of this post, I've also been writing a thing on the top 10 NHL teams that need a redesign and why they do. I haven't had time to write it all before this post here, but I'm just going to list the 10 teams that I chose here:

10. Carolina Hurricanes
9. Buffalo Sabres
8. Arizona Coyotes
7. San Jose Sharks
6. Columbus Blue Jackets
5. Washington Capitals
4. Calgary Flames
3. Florida Panthers
2. Colorado Avalanche
And for number one...drumroll please (insert drumroll sound effect here)
1. Ottawa Senators AND Pittsburgh Penguins

So there's my list. Probably a lot of teams you were expecting and maybe a few you weren't. If you have a different opinion to add be sure to comment and maybe I'll change my mind by the time I get to write this.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So the HJC Open is in the final stretch. Only 2 more rounds to go. Another great batch of concepts were sent in and I still don't even know which one to pick for the one set. You should definitely go vote for that. And while you're at it go leave a vote for the regular COTW vote as well. They're just as important (or maybe even more important) to HJC as the Open vote is.

On to the concepts!

David P. - Rapaces de Gap
Idea: This team definitely needs a redesign (1/1)
Creativity: This set plays off the current jerseys well while also improving on it (1/1)
Execution:
-Vertical stitching needs to stop at the hem stripe
-Otherwise solid (1.75/2)
Realism: For this to be realistic it would need to be covered in ads. But anywhere else this would be fine (1/1)
Pizazz: Doesn't have it (0/1)
Other areas:
+Improves the current look
+Good unity in the set (same striping patterns everywhere on each uniform)
-Helmet and pants logos should be added, but I'm also not sure if they're used in this league
-The blue numbers on the white jersey may be hard to read. I would go with black numbers or at least make the outline thicker
(3/4)

Overall: (7.75/10)

Matt G. - Colorado Avalanche vs Detroit Red Wings (Stadium Series 2016)
Idea: The different kind of mountain striping and the sublimated wings would work great in a stadium series (1/1)
Creativity: It’s nothing that blows your mind but it’s creative enough to earn the point (1/1)
Execution:  -Maybe it’s just me but the anniversary patch looks too small
-Iceborn branding on pants should be removed and replaced with the logo, as Dylan mentioned yesterday
-There should be a name on the Detroit jersey and the captains patch shouldn't be just an outline
(1/2)
Realism: It's a bit out there, but I don't think it's out there enough for a Stadium Series game (0/1)
Pizazz: Somewhat, but not entirely (0.5/1)
Other areas:
+Everyone wants to see mountain striping return to Colorado, this is different but it's a start
+The wings on the shoulders would work well for the Red Wings
+While maybe not the most fit for a Stadium Series game, these aren't bad designs by any means
+Colorado's glove design is interesting and I like it
-Colorado's socks just look like a paint bucket fill
(3/4)

Overall: (6.5/10)

Matt M. - New York Riveters
As a few other writers have mentioned I'm pretty sure these concepts were for the NWHL's design competition. I'm a bit disappointed I didn't know about it until it was too late but oh well.
Idea: They obviously needed some jerseys so good idea to give them some (1/1)
Creativity: Nowhere to take this from so definitely (1/1)
Execution:  The number's may be a little hard to read on both jerseys. Not really sure what else to do though and otherwise solid (1.75/2)
Realism: I could see these on the ice for sure, even in the NHL with the Lady Liberty logo on it (1/1)
Pizazz: It's a good, pretty simple design, but nothing stands out to me too much (0/1)
Other areas:
+Simple yet unique design
+Reminds me of the Rangers, which is good for a New York team
-I would make the hem striping a little smaller, the jersey looks pretty busy as is
(3.5/4)

Overall: (8.25/10)

Tristan M - University of Toronto Varsity Blues
Idea: So as I should have expected they currently wear Leafs copies, and Tristan goes and gives them a unique style (1/1)
Creativity: It still stays simple, but adds the red from the logo and gives a more unique design (1/1)
Execution: Solid (2/2)
Realism: This could easily be on the ice in any league. I could easily see the Jets in these even (1/1)
Pizazz: Nothing blows me away too much though (0/1)
Other areas:
+I like the script on the helmet
+The yoke design looks beautiful
+Good unity overall
-A red outline on the numbers on the white jersey would look good
(3.5/4)

Overall: (8.5/10)

So that's today's post. I'm going to give my COTW nomination to Matt M's New York Riveters concept. Do you want to nominate another concept or leave your opinion on them? Then leave a comment! I hope you guys enjoyed the post, thanks for reading, and I'll see you next week.
