Thursday: NHL and more!

Hello everybody, hope you've had a good Thursday. Welcome to today's post here on HockeyJerseyConcepts. Everyone enjoying hockey so far? Anyone been to any games? I haven't, but I hope I can catch a Stars game sometime, maybe when the Hawks play here later this season? Also, The Hawks played the Wild last night and unfortunately we lost in a shootout. Anyway, today I have a TON of concepts for you guys. Let's go.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Today, we have THREE voting reminders, so... VOTE!

Concept of the Year FINAL vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)
Outdoor Classic Top 5 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)
COTW Jan 21-27 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)

-------------------------------------------------------------

Qu├ębec Voyageurs concept (By: NB14)

This is NB14's entry into the recent NHL Expansion competition. I have to say, I like all of these. My favorite has too be the Nordique-inspired alternate jersey. I have no complaints here. 8.5/10

Karhu-Kissat (Finland) concept (By: Tatu H.)

These are some pretty good jerseys and can look better with some execution fixes. Number one, the Reebok logo needs to be single-colored and filled in with whatever color is around it. So it would be a white Reebok logo with green on the inside of the letters. Also, the rest of the collar on the front needs to be colored to fit the jersey. Now, to the jersey, I like it. The yoke looks good with good, simple striping. It's a real simple jersey. 6/10

Gwinnet Gladiators concept (By: Stephen T.)

The Gwinnet Gladiators are a team in the ECHL. Here is a look at the Gladiators' road jersey. Stephen has created new uniforms for them, using that thing design that the Penguins and Senators use. Nobody has seemed to be too much of a fan of them, and I can't say that I am a fan of them here either. I like the black alternate though, very cool. The diamonds on the jersey are also cool. 7/10

Vancouver Canucks concept (By: Kevin W.)

Here is the Canucks from Kevin's NHL "Swiftication" series. I would love to see the Canucks like this. The Canucks need to have the "V's" in the arm striping. Great series so far from Kevin. 8/10

Anaheim Ducks concept (By: Bastian)

One of the things the Ducks need to do, in my opinion... ORANGE! ORANGE! ORANGE! I love this concept here by Bastian. The striping is great and just unique. But, the this is right kind of unique. I love this and would just LOVE to see it on the ice. My only complaint would be too switch the gold-brown and black on the socks and arm stripes. 9/10

Montreal Canadiens concept (By: NB14)

Here is a sweet third jersey for the Canadiens. I haven't seen something like this before, but it looks great. The script over the logo looks good here. All I can say is, this is a good jersey, but I'm not sure if I would want the Habs to wear it on the ice. Maybe a fan jersey? 7.5/10

Lake Erie Monsters concept (By: Ryan [HJC])

The Lake Erie Monsters are the AHL affiliates for the Colorado Avalanche. Ryan has a pretty cool black alternate for them. I like the simplicity here. I like the font and logos. The yoke and collar looks good too. No real complaints from me here, Ryan. 8.5/10

Minnesota Wild concept (By: Scott M.)

The Wild are infamous in the NHL for having no real continuity in their uniforms. Scott solves that problem with these uniforms here. It seems the Wild do favor their current green alternate, so this could work. Scott adds red to the jerseys and make the wheat color into true white. I like these a lot. Great execution, as is expected from Scott. 9/10

St. Louis Blues concept (By: Darren H.)

A lot of people don't like the Blues current uniforms, and Darren has a solution for us here. I like the striping on the yokes and the stripes on the arms are great. The "A" patch with the gateway arch is cool too. On an execution note, the collar insert needs an NHL logo. Also, I think the logo on the blue jersey needs to be mainly light blue and not dark blue. Other then that, it's great. 8/10

Los Angeles Kings concept (By: Tyler G.)

Here is the LA Kings from my NHL Redesign. This is more just some modifications then a concept, but here you go. I changed the home jersey so it would have the stripes on the hem (like the road jersey). Other then that, there wasn't much else. Tell me what you think.

Vancouver Canucks concept (By: Bastian)

Here are some cool Canucks concepts from Bastian. It took me a while to notice this, but there is sublimated V's on the arms and on the front of the jersey. A very nice touch there from Bastian, I like things like that. The pants also look cool too. No complaints from me here. 8.5/10

Thanks for reading, have a good Friday, everyone!

Wednesday: Jersey Matchups

Good Wednesday everyone!

Photo from: Blackhawks Official Facebook
Over the weekend I went to my first NHL game of the year and it feels great to finally say that after those months of sadness! Sunday I went to the Red Wings at Blackhawks game. Hawks, Wings games are my favorites not because the Hawks are my team and it's a rivalry game, but because the games always LOOK good. It doesn't matter if the game is in Chicago or Detroit, both teams have great jerseys, (Chicago's are better obviously) My favorite is when the two play in Chicago, because Chicago's red jersey is my favorite, and Detroits white jersey is one of the best in the league as well. Too bad I hate them. :)

In your opinion, what are the best looking games to watch jersey-wise?

Here's the weekly voting reminders

Concept of the Year FINAL vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)
Outdoor Classic Top 5 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)
COTW Jan 21-27 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)

And Congratulations to Justin C. for his COTY win! Soon we'll know which concept it will be but he absolutely dominated the COTW votes this past year!

And your daily concepts folks,

Binghamton Senators Specialty Jersey ( NB14 )
What I Like: Sublimated jersey stripes. Shoulder Patches.

What I Dislike: Gap between sublimated stripe and black stripe differs on the chest and arms. Thin white and black stripes on the hem.

Suggestions: Fix that gap between the stripes I mentioned, and show that shoulder patch logo so we can see what it looks like. I don't know that as a real Senators logo so if that's an original work you might wanna show it off, or if you borrowed it tell where you got it from.

Rating: 6/10

Team USA Concept (Brandon C.)

What I Like: Stars for the shoulder patches as well as pants striping. The away jersey is great.

What I Dislike: I do like the striping pattern, but for whatever reason it's not working for me in this concept. I don't like the large amount of white in the home jersey. There's not enough red for my taste.

Suggestions:
Home Jersey: Change the white on the arms to blue to match the away jersey. Make the little white stripe under the red stripe blue, and make that thicker blue stripe white, so the only two stripes on the arm goes "think red then thick white. Make hem and socks match that pattern.
Away Jersey: Make the away jerseys match the home jerseys arms with my suggestions so the jersey has a white base and blue arms, and I think this jersey set will look very swell. Good concept and it's only a few tweaks away from being even better

Rating: 6/10

Washington Capitals Concept (E. Awad)
What I Like: Striping/Cuff pattern. Looks a little better than their current jerseys.

What I Dislike: Would rather see the Caps stay a primarily red team with blue as a secondary color. There is no consistency between the jersey, pants, and socks.

Suggestions: On the jerseys, swap blue for red, on both of them. The logo on the home jersey should then change to white or blue. Ditch pants stripes completely. And make the socks match up with the arm stripes.

Rating: 6/10

Connecticut Huskies NCAA Concept (Scott M.)
What I Like:

What I Dislike: This is basically a simple rendering of their current jerseys on a Reebok jersey.

Suggestions: Make some new jerseys. Make them "Scott M. Originals" I'd say, use the UCONN Husky Dog logo somewhere on the jerseys. Change the striping, add silver? Something to make it your own and not a literal translation of something that already exists. Again, Good execution though

Rating: 6/10

Montreal Maroons Concept (Brandon C.)
What I Like: The color scheme is interesting. Definitely unique. Simple striping for a set of jerseys for an old team is spot on. You don't want to get too modern.

What I Dislike: Too much black on the white jersey. There should be more of that beige color, but then again it could start to look too bright and washed out. Either way, something looks odd.

Suggestions: Maybe try a different striping pattern that can balance the colors out a little better, that way the colors can all look balanced between the two jerseys. Maybe even try a beige jersey instead of white.

Rating: 7/10

Peterborough Petes Concept (Scott M.)
What I Like: I really like when teams use a two-color scheme. It looks very classy. Scott takes the Petes back in time with this look too.

What I Dislike: Nothing to not like here but there isn't really a lot of creativity. This is a look the Petes have used before, and still sort of use.

Suggestions: Maybe add a unique, creative third jersey to at least leave your own mark on the Petes. Great execution as always from Mr. Scott.

Rating: 7/10

Binghamton Senators Concept (Alan H.)
What I Like: I like the attempt to call back to the old Sens' striping heavy barberpole jerseys without actually making a barberpole jersey. I like shoulder striping. The number font is ok, could be better though.

What I Dislike: The black cuffs and hems look odd to me. Makes the jersey seem too busy with the shoulder striping. I don't care for the name font.

Suggestions: Ditch the black in the cuffs and hem (and socks). Makes the jersey seem less cluttered. Change the name font. Also, make the little white patch under the Reebok logo on the back red, and the Reebok logo white.

Rating: 7.5/10

Team Canada Concept (Darren H.)
What I Like: Striping looks great in those colors. I LOVE that Canada logo with the pattern in the leaf. So B.A.....

What I Dislike:  VERY iffy on the gold collar and the yoke stripe.

Suggestions: Nothing really besides maybe change the collar and ditch the yoke stripe. Also, maybe get rid of the "CANADA" and leave just the leaf, that'd look great

Rating: 8/10

San Jose Sharks Third Jersey Concept (Bastian)

What I Like: GRAY JERSEY! One NHL team should attempt a gray jersey, and the Sharks could be the best possible team to do it. (Jets? Hurricanes?) I like the shoulder patches as well as the Shark logo outside of the triangle. I like this logo a better because it has the shark's body and not just part of a shark appearing out of nowhere.

What I Dislike: Needs orange. I don't know why so many people dislike the orange in the Sharks' branding. I feel the orange and teal play off each other nicely. I'm not saying that orange should be used a lot, but just as trim, it POPS! And either replace black or gray in the arm and hem stripes with orange and this concept could be even cooler!

Suggestions: Add orange into the striping and back into the logo!

Rating: 8.5/10

Toronto Maple Leafs Nike Swift Concept (Kevin W.)
What I Like: I don't mean to plug myself here, but this set is very similar to a concept I made a few months back, so right off the bat, I like it. Kevin has the same ideas about the Leaf's look that I do. Everything from the striping and logo that should be used primarily. This set looks great on the Swift template

What I Dislike: The sock striping, that's just something that the Leafs have done which I have never understood. Is there anything historic behind that? Or just a bad design choice? It also looks way too small on the sock.

Suggestions: Make the sock look like the arm by only doing one set of the stripes. ID on the concept!!!

Rating: 8.5/10

Pittsburgh Penguins Third Jersey Concept (Bastian)
What I Like: Yellow base color. The Pens NEED to go back to this color scheme and NEED to have a yellow third jersey. Arm striping. It's unique on it's own while still resembles the Pens' 90s unis. Classic...

What I Dislike: As far as branding goes, the "RoboPen" and the "Skating Penguin" don't belong together. They look far too different. So I'd say pick one and stick with it, or, maybe it's time for a new logo? Also, I don't care for the big yellow stripe on the pants.

Suggestions: At the very least ditch the pant stripe. I'd go with RoboPen on the chest, the "angle-heavy" logo would look good with the angled arm stripes.

Rating: 9/10

Tuesday: A New Day

Hello everyone, this is Steven.  As you may have noticed on the weekend update, I'll be the Tuesday writer from now on, and Dylan will be writing on Wednesday.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All the COTW votes last year have been building up to the COTY vote going on right now.  There is also this week's COTW vote, and the AHL Outdoor Classic vote.

Concept of the Year FINAL vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)
Outdoor Classic Top 5 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)
COTW Jan 21-27 vote (ends Friday @ 11:59pm EST)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Harvard Crimson (by Bailey S.)
I know nothing about this team, but from what I can tell from a quick search, these are their current jerseys.  I also know nothing about NCAA rules, but I would think one of these jerseys would need to be white or a light colour.  The striping pattern for each jersey is pretty good, I don't mind them mismatching at all.  I do think the logo on the home jersey needs another white outline to stand out better.  Also all the numbers, wordmark, and the name on the back could use white outlines for better visibility.  There are some execution errors, including the inside of the jersey should be the same colour as the outside, and the names are too high up.  I'd recommend taking a look at these helpful tutorials Ryan made. 5/10

Minnesota North Stars (by Ted N.)
It's always cool to see concepts for teams that no longer exist.  This concept makes good use of the North Stars' original primary logo.  I do like the use of that logo, but I don't think it needs to be recoloured for each jersey, I'd recommend just using the version that is on the green jersey.  I also think that the white jersey's numbers would be better green.  Execution notes, the hem stripes should be above the jersey stitching, the sock stripes are too high up, and the inside collar area on the green jersey should be green.  6/10

Seattle Sonics Sacramento Kings (by Mike S.)
Mike continues his NBA series with a Sacramento Kings concept that appears to be based off of this jersey.  It has a lot of potential, and I think it could be great with the following changes.  I really like the striping on the sleeves, so I'd recommend matching the hem stripes to them, or at least making about 1.5 times thicker.  The hem stripes also are a bit too high up, and the jersey stitching shouldn't continue below them.  The purple script looks good, but I think the numbers should be white for better readability.  7/10

Florida Panthers (by E.Awad)
This seems to be a popular idea for a concept, turning the Panthers current stripes into a more traditional pattern.  It does look quite good, there a just a few minor details that I think could make it even better.  I'd change the white to yellow in the road jersey's collar, same with the white in the red pants (by the way I love the idea of two different colour pants).  I'd also recommend making the numbers and captain letters match, and lowering the sock stripes because right now they'd almost be under the pants.  7/10

Montreal Canadiens "Matrix" logo (by Brian B.)
Here's something we haven't seen before, the Montreal Canadiens logo in the style of the Matrix.  To be honest, I've never seen the Matrix so I'm not the best person to judge this.  I'll just say it is a very unique idea.  I'd like to hear some comments about what you folks think about this.  8/10

New Jersey Devils (by Bastian S.)
The Devils have a very good look right now, so it's good that Bastian didn't change too much.  The new striping seems to be influenced a bit by the Devils original uniforms, which is cool.  The Devils aren't likely to change their uniform anytime soon, but if they were I'd like to see something like this.  8/10

2014 Winter Classic (by Dave K.)
In my opinion the Toronto jersey here is okay, but the Detroit jersey is the best of the two.  It clearly is influenced by past jerseys in the franchise's history, but is still something new.  The Toronto jersey looks nice, but it is lacking that influence from past jerseys, which I think hurts it as a Winter Classic concept.  The Toronto logo is great though, with the Toronto Arenas' "T" logo in the maple leaf.  Overall I'd like to see one less outline on the numbers, as most jerseys from these franchises past had very simple numbers.  8/10

Vancouver Canucks (by Tyler G.)
Here Tyler takes the Canucks current third jersey, adds some stuff, and the creates a matching road jersey.  I like the addition of the V in the sleeve stripes, it makes so much sense for the Canucks.  I'm not so sure about the stripes on the shoulders, I like how unique they are, but I don't know if they'd look good.  I'd have to see what they look like in real life before making a final judgement.  Execution is good, as always with Tyler.  8/10

Sherbrooke Phoenix (by E.Awad)
I made a quick note when I received this concept that said "everything is good, but switch the socks", and that basically sums up my thoughts perfectly.  I get that the socks are unique the way they are, but I really don't think they work in this situation.  The jerseys are great though.  If I had one suggestion it would be to make the road shoulder yolk go Navy-Light Blue-Navy to better match the striping, but that is very minor.  These would be a great improvement over Sherbrooke's current St. Louis/Nashville rip-offs.  8/10

Florida Panthers (by Bastian S.)
I'd love to see a yellow third jersey for the Panthers, and this would be a great option.  The simple striping pattern works well with such a bright jersey, and having the arm stripes angled is a nice reference to the Panthers original jerseys.  One thing is the logo, using so much yellow, kind of gets lost in the jersey.  I'd suggest either a thicker white outline or using the Panthers gold colour.  9/10

Minnesota Wild (by Brandon C.)
I'm my opinion the chest stripe is underused in the NHL (only Montreal and Ottawa), and it looks great here in green and wheat.  It could be lowed a bit though, as the logo seems too close to the collar.  I also think having the TV numbers in the sleeve stripes would be really cool.  Even without those changes this is awesome.  Match it up with the Wild's original primary jerseys and they'd have one of the best looks in the league.  COTW nomination from me!!!  9/10

Monday: Concepts on my Mind

Hey guys, now you know what I look like, hey, sup? Yeah it's cool, I feel sort of more open and less "hiding behind a keyboard", just thought I'd say my real name is Sean and my pen name, Jets96, is the year of my birth, 1996, and my favourite team, the Jets.

In case anyone missed it, here's a link to the weekend update

Hockey is in full swing, the Jets are doing rather well, better than I expected, and hopefully your team is doing well too, unless you're a Caps fan, in which case, good luck and hopefully they turn around... and not beat the Jets!

If you're in the GTA and like minor league pro hockey, Brampton is getting a CHL team (Central, not Canadian). The team is currently having a name the team contest which you can enter here. The team, I think should NOT be called the Battalion, I like Knights, like Bramptonintes, but that's just me.

COTW has been reset after this weekend's playoff, check out the 3 concepts up for ballot and everyone who has an email who reads this can vote! Voting ends on Friday.

Congrats to Justin C. on his secured COTY 2012 win, but we don't know what he's going to win it for, so remember to vote on which concept you like more! Voting ends on Friday.

Finally, the AHL Winter Classic Contest enters its voting phase, check out the concepts by clicking on the banner above. Voting ends on Friday.

On to the Concepts you all came for...

Pittsburgh Penguins Concept (By: Stephen T.)

I am totally for the Pens going back to the late 90's alternate for a throwback, no more blue. This is okay, but it could use some work. The all gray striping is okay and the yellow numbers look okay, that could work. The major problem I have in the logo, this needs the Robo-Pen, its of the era, and I get it if you're trying to branch out, but the two go hand and hand. The logo is a little too big and the vector should be the script (but the latter is really minor). There is stuff too like and it has potential, but it needs work (6/10)

Team Canada Concept (By: Ted N.)

I am all for a black Canadian alternate, and there are somethings I like. The circle logo is cool, and I like the maple leaf on the shoulder. The striping is pretty cool, a little low, but its okay. The only gripe I really have is the red pants, it looks a little odd, black would look a lot better. Also the reds should match between the shoulder patch and the rest of the jersey. The name bar is alittle off but it isn't too big, still has potential. (6.5/10

Team Comcast (Youth Squad) (By: Bailey S.)

I like seeing high school and youth league concepts, they are off the beaten path and the creative possibilities are almost endless. The Atlanta-esque arm yokes are really cool, I am definitely in the minority on that but, especially in a minor league, that's okay by me. The only execution gripes are the different shades of black on the white jersey and the bottom of the black jersey should be all back and the bottom of the white jersey should be all white. Other than that these look good for a youth team, my youth team didn't look this good at all, and even taking that away they still look good. (7/10)

Binghampton Senators Concept (By: Me (Jets96)

I don't usually like to send in my contest entries to HJC, unless I felt A) they can stand alone or B) I messed up on the contest entry and wanted to make things better. In this case, I left the NHL tags on my concept and that hurt it a lot, lesson of the day, check your entries TWICE before sending it in, with any concept. I basically wanted to make it look like a real roman officer's uniform, and I tried that with sub laminated striping. The hem is supposed to look like a skirt and the yoke is supposed to look like a shoulder guard from Ancient Rome. I don't know if it does this all too well, you guys can tell me in the comments.

Minnesota North Stars Concepts (By: Bastian S.)

While I love the Minnesota Wild's new look, well, look as in like their current look, the North Stars look great, and after seeing Mike Modano wearing the North Stars jersey in 2009, I wanna see them comeback in a throwback. As for this concept, it looks pretty good, the lack of black in my only problem, but that's okay. The really cool thing about this concept is the striping, it's unique, and character filled, it's vintage but not in your face. The yoke understripe is decent, but I think it would look better with an actual yoke. (7.5/10)

S.C. Bern Concepts (By: Stephen T.)

I once again, love getting to review European concepts, and this one is one of the better ones I have seen in a while. This template really should be used more, it's the original Edge All Star jersey and most people over look it, but, this concept take full advantage of the template. I think the home looks better than the away, but both look great, the colours really flow and the whole look is very Euro, which is important. The pants should both be the blank or with the red stripe, but that's okay. (8/10)

Anaheim Ducks Concepts (By: Jack H.)

This is Jack's first concept to HJC, and what a way to start off. The return of eggplant to the Ducks is a great idea, and the striping is pretty cool, especially on the home. If only the duck foot was silver, it would have a clean bill of health, other than that, it looks good. As for preferences, I think the duck mask should be on the front and the duck foot on the shoulders, but that's fine, just me. Looking forward to seeing more Jack! (8/10)

Dallas Stars Concepts (By: Fergus)

With Dallas getting a new look in the spring, we can expect something green, and Fergus has given us a possible idea. This set looks very North Stars, which is good, as the look is classic. The yokes are cool, especially since they are square..sort of. The striping is a little boring but the colours are good enough to hold it up. No real gripes, just a good look. (8.5/10)

Phoenix Coyotes Concept (By: Kyle C.)

WHITEOUT BELONGS IN WINNIPEG! Now that I have that off my chest, everything else looks awesome. While this is meant to be a fan jersey, these would look decent on the ice. The logo looks great with a simple outline and everything holds up, which I think has to do with the colours. The two colours contrast so well it works to its advantage. One thing I'd try to make it more deserty is making it a sandstorm, like using beige instead of the white, but, this still look good. (8.5/10)

Colorado Rockies Concepts (By: Bastian S.)

The Rockies need to come back, there have been a lot of good Rockies concepts over the past year, that have sold me on this look. I like the Avs look but, this is incredible. Bastian has given us a good set for their comeback. The home looks great, the white over sized cuffs look great and the C shoulder patch is great and I like everything about it. The same thing can be said for the white jersey, and I think this needs to see ice time, along with Steven G.'s alternate, the Rockies are ready to go! (9/10) COTW Nom. from me!

Cincinnati Stingers Concepts (By: Jordan R.)

The Stingers were one of the team who lost the bid to make it to the NHL in 1979 (looking back on it, all the surviving WHA teams should have been let in). Jordan has given us an idea of what they would be wearing today. I love almost everything on this concept, right down to the presentation. All 3 jerseys look like a set, and when they are lined up on this concept, I want to see them on ice, even in the AHL. My only gripe is the socks, they are all the same, they should all corespond with the jersey, but they still look okay. (9/10).

The entry phase has ended for the Outdoor Classic competition. I was really disappointed to see that so many people (about 80% of entries) did not follow the HJC Logo Use Policy. Seeing as there were a lot of people who didn't comply I'll see what I can do about making that clearer. I'll start now by saying that you should go review the policy on the ABOUT/CONTACT HJC tab because it ALWAYS applies...ALL THE TIME.

Anyways, Top 5 voting now begins. You can see the Outdoor Classic entries by clicking the banner at the top of the page or by going to the OUTDOOR CLASSIC COMP tab. Voting end on Friday.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The nominees have been listed on the side of the page for the COTW Jan. 21-27. You can see those concepts by clicking on the banner or by going to the CONCEPT OF THE WEEK tab. Voting ends Friday on this one as well.

If you were following HJC during the summer you may remember that Fredericton High School (Fredericton, NB) used HJC to find a new white sweater for their team. Well their sweaters were delivered to them a couple of weeks ago and now Jeff from FHS wants to share some images with us.
Photos: Jeff Currie
From all of the concepts sent in, Jeff liked what he saw from Matt M. the best. He then worked with Matt independently to come up with the exact look that the school required. I think they turned out great! Really solid, modern, and creative look.

I thought it would be a good idea to get to know myself and the weekly bloggers just a little bit better. So, here are small profile cards for each of us. These will be able to be seen from the ABOUT/CONTACT HJC page.
